Terms and Conditions
Introduction and Acceptance of Terms
Welcome to LawStreet! These Terms and Conditions (“Terms”) govern your access to and use of the LawStreet website (the “Website ” or “our site”), which is operated by us to help users find and compare solicitors in England and Wales. By accessing or using LawStreet, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree with any part of these Terms, please do not use our Website.
We may update or revise these Terms from time to time. When we make changes, we will update the “last updated” date at the top of this page. For significant changes, we may also provide notice on our homepage or via other communication. Your continued use of LawStreet after any changes are posted constitutes acceptance of those changes. It is your responsibility to review these Terms periodically for any updates.
About LawStreet – Information Only, Not Legal Advice
LawStreet is an online directory and information platform that enables users to search for solicitors (lawyers) and legal service providers in England and Wales. We aim to provide helpful information such as solicitor names, firm details, practice areas, and contact information to assist you in making informed decisions. However, LawStreet is not a law firm, and we do not offer legal advice or legal services ourselves. All information available on LawStreet is for general informational purposes only; nothing on our site should be taken as professional legal advice for your specific situation. Using LawStreet does not create any solicitor-client or attorney-client relationship between you and LawStreet or between you and any solicitor listed on our site.
While we strive to keep the information on our site accurate and up-to-date, we cannot guarantee that all details (such as a solicitor’s contact info, areas of practice, or qualifications) are correct, complete, or current at all times. The legal profession is dynamic – solicitors may move firms, change specializations, or have status changes, and there may be some time lag before such changes are reflected on our site. Therefore, you should independently verify critical information (for example, by checking a solicitor’s registration on the Solicitors Regulation Authority website or contacting the firm directly) before relying on it. LawStreet does not endorse or recommend any particular solicitor or law firm. The inclusion of any professional in our directory does not mean we have vetted their qualifications or that we guarantee the quality of their services. You should exercise your own judgment and due diligence when selecting a legal representative.
No Attorney-Client Relationship: Communicating with a solicitor through information obtained on LawStreet or sending a message via any LawStreet-facilitated contact form does not, in itself, create an attorney-client relationship. Any engagement of a solicitor that you decide upon is solely between you and that solicitor. LawStreet is not a party to any agreements or communications between clients and solicitors. If you need specific legal advice, we strongly encourage you to consult directly with a qualified solicitor (for example, by making an appointment). The solicitors listed on our site may offer initial consultations, and any such consultation or engagement is outside the scope of LawStreet’s platform.
Geographic Scope: LawStreet’s services and content are focused on solicitors in England and Wales. We do not presently cover legal professionals in Scotland, Northern Ireland, or other jurisdictions. The legal information or references on our site are intended for England and Wales (for instance, references to regulatory bodies apply to those in E&W). If you choose to use LawStreet to seek legal services outside of England and Wales, be aware that the information might not be applicable or comprehensive.
Your Use of Our Website (Acceptable Use Policy)
We grant you a limited, non-transferable, non-exclusive license to use our Website for your own personal, non-commercial use, subject to these Terms. You agree to use LawStreet only for lawful purposes and in accordance with these Terms. In particular, when using our site, you agree NOT to:
- Violate Laws or Regulations: You will not use the site in any way that violates any applicable law or regulation. This includes, but is not limited to, not using the site to engage in any fraudulent activity, not harassing or defaming others, and not infringing intellectual property rights.
- Submit False or Misleading Information: You will not impersonate any person or entity or misrepresent your identity or affiliation with any person or entity while using our site. (For example, if we later allow user reviews or comments, you must not falsely claim to be a client of a solicitor if you are not.)
- Interfere with the Website: You will not attempt to interfere with the proper working of LawStreet or with any other user’s use and enjoyment of the site. Prohibited interference includes transmitting or introducing any malicious code (like viruses, worms, Trojan horses), launching any form of denial-of-service attack, or attempting to hack or gain unauthorized access to any part of the site or its backend systems.
- Automated Access and Scraping: You will not use any robot, spider, scraper, crawler, or other automated means to access the site for any purpose without our express prior written permission. You also agree not to (a) engage in the systematic retrieval of data or content from the site to create a collection, compilation, database, or directory without written permission; (b) harvest or collect information about other users of the site; or (c) use any device, software, or routine that interferes with the normal operation of the site. (In plain terms: you’re welcome to manually use our directory to find solicitors, but you’re not allowed to run bots to copy our entire solicitor database or overwhelm our servers.)
- Prohibited Content Submission: Since currently users cannot post content on LawStreet, this may not apply yet. However, if in future we allow user-generated content (like reviews or Q&A), you agree not to submit anything illegal, offensive, or that violates anyone’s rights. This would include not posting defamatory statements, not uploading content that belongs to someone else (copyright) without permission, and not posting others’ personal data unlawfully.
- Spam and Unsolicited Communications: You will not use the site to transmit or send unsolicited commercial communications. This means you shouldn’t use any contact information obtained from LawStreet (for example, solicitor email addresses) to send bulk marketing emails, and you shouldn’t post any unauthorized advertising on our site (if posting becomes possible). Likewise, you should not attempt to advertise or promote your own or any third-party products/services on our site without our permission.
We reserve the right to monitor the site for compliance with these Terms (though we have no affirmative obligation to do so). If we suspect any misuse, we may investigate and take appropriate action. This could include suspending or terminating your access to LawStreet (with or without notice) and, if necessary, contacting law enforcement or pursuing legal remedies.
Intellectual Property Rights
All content and materials on LawStreet – including the website design, text, graphics, logos, button icons, images, data compilations, software, and the arrangement of these – are the property of LawStreet or our content suppliers and are protected by intellectual property laws (such as copyright, database rights, and trademarks). LawStreet’s compilation of solicitor listings and the presentation of that data is protected by copyright and database rights.
- LawStreet Content: You may electronically copy or print portions of LawStreet for your personal use (for example, printing a list of solicitors from a search result for reference). However, you must not reproduce, distribute, modify, create derivative works from, publicly display, publicly perform, republish, download, store, or transmit any of the material on our site for any commercial purpose without our prior written consent. This includes scraping or exporting our solicitor directory to populate another database, or using our content in any competitor service. If you wish to use any content from LawStreet beyond what is allowed by these Terms or by applicable statutory exceptions (like brief quotations under fair dealing), please contact us to request permission.
- Trademarks: “LawStreet” and our logo are trademarks/service marks belonging to us (whether registered or unregistered). All other names, logos, product and service names, designs, and slogans on LawStreet may be trademarks of their respective owners (for example, the names of law firms or organizations might be trademarks of those entities). You are not permitted to use LawStreet’s name or logo in any advertising or publicity or otherwise imply an endorsement by or affiliation with LawStreet without our prior written consent. Similarly, you should not remove or alter any trademark, logo, copyright, or other proprietary notices from materials you obtain from our site.
- User Contributions: Currently, users cannot contribute content to LawStreet (such as reviews or forum posts). In the event that we introduce such features, any content you submit would remain your property, but you would grant LawStreet a license to use it on our site. We’ll update our Terms accordingly if that happens.
- Copyright Infringement Concerns: We respect intellectual property rights. If you believe that any content on LawStreet infringes your copyright or other IP rights, please notify us with detailed information (including proof of ownership and the specific location of the infringing material on our site). We have procedures in place under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and UK copyright laws to respond to such claims. We may remove or disable access to allegedly infringing content and, if appropriate, terminate the accounts of repeat infringers (if accounts exist in the future).
Disclaimers of Warranties
LawStreet strives to provide useful and accurate information, but there are important disclaimers we need to make. Your use of the Website is at your own risk. LawStreet (including our owners, team members, and affiliates) provides the site on an “as is” and “as available” basis without any warranties of any kind, either express or implied.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, we disclaim all express, implied, and statutory warranties with respect to the site and the information or services provided through the site. This includes, but is not limited to, implied warranties of accuracy, completeness, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not guarantee that the content is accurate, reliable or correct; that the service will meet your requirements or expectations; that the service will be available at any particular time or location (or uninterrupted); that any defects or errors will be corrected; or that the site is free of viruses or other harmful components.
Specific points to note:
- Information Accuracy: LawStreet does not warrant or guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness of the information on the site. Information is provided for general guidance and may be compiled from public records, information provided by the solicitors/firms themselves, or other sources we believe to be reliable. Nonetheless, errors can occur. LawStreet is not responsible if information made available on this site is not accurate, complete or current. Any reliance you place on such information is strictly at your own risk.
- No Legal Advice: As noted, nothing on LawStreet constitutes legal advice. We disclaim any liability for actions taken based on information provided on our site. Always consult a qualified lawyer for legal advice tailored to your situation. LawStreet itself cannot be held liable for any outcome (legal, financial, or otherwise) that results from you using information obtained through our site.
- Service Availability: We do not warrant that the Website will be available uninterrupted, secure, or free from bugs or errors at all times. There may be occasions when the site is unavailable (e.g., for maintenance or due to technical issues beyond our control). We will try to minimize downtime, but we are not liable for any inconvenience or loss caused by temporary unavailability of the site.
- Third-Party Provided Content: Some information on LawStreet might be provided by third parties (for example, if solicitors provide descriptions of their practice). We are not responsible for any such third-party content’s truthfulness or reliability.
- No Endorsement: LawStreet’s inclusion of any third-party (like a solicitor or firm) does not mean we endorse them. Similarly, any legal articles or guides on our site (if provided) are for general information and not endorsed advice. We make no representation that any legal information on the site is up-to-date or that it applies to your circumstances. Use of any information on the site is strictly at your own risk.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties, so some of the above exclusions may not apply to you. In such cases, any implied warranties will be limited to the maximum extent permitted by the applicable law.
Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, LawStreet and its affiliates, and their respective directors, officers, employees, agents, or suppliers, shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, including without limitation, personal injury, pain and suffering, emotional distress, loss of profits, loss of business or anticipated savings, loss of use, loss of goodwill, or loss of data, arising out of or in connection with: (a) your use, inability to use, or reliance on the Website or any content on the Website; or (b) any interaction or relationship between you and any solicitor or third party identified through the Website.
This limitation applies to any theory of liability, whether based in contract, tort (including negligence), strict liability, or any other legal theory, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages.
For example:
- LawStreet will not be liable if you contact a solicitor via our site and, for whatever reason, that solicitor-client relationship does not work out or you suffer any losses as a result of that engagement. We simply provide a starting point for finding a solicitor; the ultimate choice and outcome are beyond our control.
- If the information on the site has an error (say, an incorrect phone number or an outdated address) and you incur a cost or inconvenience because of it, we are not liable for those consequences.
- If someone gains unauthorized access to our site and alters information (though we have security measures, this is a hypothetical extreme), we won’t be liable for any reliance placed on the altered information.
- If the site is unavailable and you cannot access information when you needed it, we are not liable for any impact that might have (like a deadline missed to contact a solicitor – please plan ahead and have alternatives).
- Any software downloaded or obtained through our site (if any) is at your own discretion and risk, and we will not be responsible for any damage to your computer system or loss of data that results from the download of any material.
Exception – Things We Don’t Exclude: Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be limited or excluded under law. This means we do not exclude our liability for:
- Death or personal injury caused by our negligence (or the negligence of our employees, agents, or subcontractors);
- Fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation;
- Any other liability which cannot be excluded or limited by applicable law (for example, certain statutory liabilities under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, if applicable to our service).
Indemnity: You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless LawStreet and its affiliates, licensors, and service providers, and its and their respective officers, directors, employees, contractors, and agents, from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, judgments, awards, losses, costs, expenses, or fees (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of or relating to your violation of these Terms or your use of the Website. This includes, for example, your misuse of the site, your violation of any law or regulation, or your infringement of any third-party rights (including, without limitation, intellectual property or privacy rights). We reserve the right, at our own expense, to assume the exclusive defense and control of any matter otherwise subject to indemnification by you (in which event you will cooperate with us in asserting any available defenses).
Acknowledgment of Free Service: You acknowledge that LawStreet is providing this Website and its contents free of charge to end-users. Users are not paying LawStreet to use the directory. In light of this, and given the informational nature of the service, you agree that it is reasonable for LawStreet to limit its liability as described above. As long as the Website and the information and services on the Website are provided free of charge, we will not be liable for any loss or damage of any nature, to the fullest extent permitted by law.
If you are dissatisfied with any portion of the Website or with any of these Terms, your sole and exclusive remedy is to discontinue use of the Website.
Third-Party Links and Resources
LawStreet may contain hyperlinks to third-party websites or resources for your convenience. This can include, for example, links to a solicitor’s own website, to Google Maps for directions, to legal aid resources, or to articles on external sites. These links are provided as a convenience only and do not signify an endorsement by LawStreet of the third-party site or resource, its contents, or its services. We have no control over the contents of those sites or resources, and we accept no responsibility for them or for any loss or damage that may arise from your use of them.
When you click on a third-party link, you will leave the LawStreet site and be subject to the terms and conditions and privacy policy of that other website. We strongly encourage you to read those, as they may differ from ours. LawStreet is not responsible for the privacy practices or the content of third-party websites.
Additionally, any dealings you have with third parties found through LawStreet are between you and the third party. If you follow a link to hire a solicitor or to use another service, that transaction is strictly between you and that party. LawStreet is not involved in any agreements (for example, fee arrangements or service contracts) you enter with solicitors or any other third parties, even if you discovered them through our site. Should a dispute arise between you and any such third party, you agree that LawStreet is under no obligation to become involved or indemnify either party.
Termination of Use
LawStreet reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to terminate or suspend your access to all or part of the Website, with or without notice, for any reason, including without limitation, if we believe you have violated these Terms or engaged in any conduct which we consider to be inappropriate or unlawful. This may include blocking certain IP addresses or user agents if we detect misuse.
Upon termination, the rights and licenses granted to you in these Terms will cease immediately, and you must stop using the site. If you have materially breached these Terms causing us or others harm, we may take additional legal action against you.
Sections of these Terms that by their nature should survive termination (such as intellectual property rights, disclaimers, limitations of liability, governing law, etc.) will survive.
Governing Law and Jurisdiction
These Terms and any dispute or claim arising out of or in connection with these Terms, the Website, or your use of the Website (including non-contractual disputes or claims) shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. We and you both irrevocably agree that the courts of England and Wales shall have exclusive jurisdiction to settle any dispute or claim arising out of or in connection with the use of the Website or these Terms.
If you are using LawStreet as a consumer (for personal, non-business use), and you are domiciled in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you may also have the option to bring proceedings in your local jurisdiction. However, as noted, our service is primarily targeted to England and Wales.
Miscellaneous
- Severability: If any provision of these Terms is held by a court or other tribunal of competent jurisdiction to be invalid, illegal, or unenforceable for any reason, that provision shall be eliminated or limited to the minimum extent such that the remaining provisions of the Terms will continue in full force and effect. In other words, the invalid part will be severed, and the rest of the agreement remains binding.
- Entire Agreement: These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy and Cookies Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and LawStreet with respect to your use of the Website, and supersede all prior and contemporaneous understandings, agreements, representations, and warranties, both written and oral, regarding the Website. You acknowledge that you have not relied on any statement, promise, or representation not expressly stated in these Terms.
- No Waiver: Our failure to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms shall not operate as a waiver of that right or provision. Any waiver of any provision of these Terms will be effective only if in writing and signed by an authorized representative of LawStreet.
- Assignment: You may not assign or transfer your rights or obligations under these Terms to anyone else without our prior written consent. We may assign our rights and obligations to another party (for example, if our company is acquired or if we transfer the operation of the site to another entity) without notice to you. These Terms will inure to the benefit of our successors and permitted assigns.
- Third-Party Rights: A person who is not a party to these Terms has no right under the Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 1999 (or equivalent legislation) to enforce any provision of these Terms.
